Pali Lookout Demonstration Garden

Since 2014, KMWP volunteers have been working to remove invasive vegetation at the Pali Lookout Pali Lookout Demonstration Garden.

Pali Lookout is one of the most visited state parks in Hawaiʻi, attracting over a million visitors to the site each year.

  • Time Commitment: 4 hours.

  • Activity Level: Easy.

  • Climate: Windward mesic forest. Winds continuously gust at the site. Climate varies based on weather conditions.

  • Moʻolelo sharing of Pali Lookout.

  • Planting native seedlings in the restoration area.

  • Removing targeted invasive plants.

  • Trash clean up within the restoration site.

  • Seed collection of kawelu and other native plants.

Since 2014 KMWP volunteers have been working to remove invasive vegetation and install a Native Forest Demonstration Garden on the eroded hillside adjacent to the lookout path.

The garden features dozens of native and endemic species such as the swaying kāwelu grass renowned to the Pali area. With the help of our project partners we have also erected educational signs to share the importance of this restoration effort with the visiting public.

Volunteers use basic gardening tools to weed and plant in designated areas.
